Many people speak too quickly when they have to face an audience . For the untrained speaker the shock of having to face an audience causes intense anxiety rapid heartbeat and a complete body acceleration. Feelings of high anxiety and intense fear are often experienced by the speaker with no ability to slow down and take control.
As a result, the speech becomes extremely rapid. This is an automatic response and telling yourself to slow down will not work. Here is a simple exercise that I have developed for training your brain to break your rapid speech reaction to speaking in public. Give five minutes each day to this practice and eventually you will end your tendency to rush your words when you speak in front of people who are looking at you.
PRACTISE
Take a magazine or a newspaper and read a short article or half of a long article out loud. At the end of every sentence force yourself to stop reading and slowly squeeze your toes one time. Then resume reading. When you force yourself to stop like this you interrupt the acceleration you have created with your rapid reading .Eventually you will become used to this interruption and your rapid reading style and speaking style will slow down .
